Petasites Extract received Level A Classification for Migraine

Petasites extract (butterbur) is effective for migraine prevention and should be offered to patients with migraine to reduce the frequency and severity of migraine attacks (Level A). This is the result of a new, evidence based guideline of the American Academy of Neurology and the American Headache Society (AHS), published in April 2012 in the renowned Journal of Neurology.

The European Federation of Neurological Societies (EFNS) guideline on the drug treatment of migraine recommends petasites extract for the preventative treatment of migraine since 2009.

Petasin is one of the active ingredients in the petasites hybridus plant. The analgesic, anti-inflammatory, and anti-spasmodic properties of the petasites hybridus have been valued since ancient times. It wasn’t until the 20th and 21st centuries that the potential of this medicinal plant was properly discovered – much thanks to scientific studies and research. By now, petasites hybridus has become a favourite in the treatment of migraine. About 10% of the population suffers from migraine; many more are affected by tension-type headaches. A migraine prophylaxis helps many of those affected.
